Mesembryanthemum are fantastic plants that thrive on neglect, great for first time, time limited or water conscious gardeners. This little gem of a plant absolutely adores dry, hot, sunny borders, containers and rockeries. Exposed sun drenched areas are no problem for this plant. Growing to a height of about 10cm/4inches the succulent, fleshy-leaves will cover the ground quickly or gently trail over walls and containers becoming covered in metallic vibrant flowers all summer long. Insect pollinators love this plant.
Mesembryanthemum are known as 'ice plants' because of the glistening globular bladder cells covering their stems, fruit and leaves.
Culinary note: Leaves can be eaten raw, mainly being used as a spinach substitute.
